A bit about myself...

My name is Declan McGrath and I'm doing the MSc. in Software Design and Development at NUI Galway. I have had a long and chequered career to date and my primary degree was in Industrial Biochemistry in the University of Limerick. My main interest in computing at the moment is Content Based Multimedia Retrieval. My MSc. thesis concerns the development of a system which can differentiate between different classes of music and sounds and hence form the basis of a musical search engine. I am also interested in the field of image retrieval and medical imaging. To date the other main projects I have embarked on include the Computational analysis of E.coli DNA using Bioinformatic techniques. I did this as my Final Year Project in the University of Limerick and involved scanning stretches of DNA for features that would indicate the presence of potential genes. The fruits of my labour can be found in my Final Year Project Thesis. The main project I carried out this year is a Multi-Agent Based Simulation of an aution scenario which I wrote in C++. The code and executables can be found as a .zip file if your follow this source code link. In addition, I have compiled two literature reviews on Network Security which are available for download. They are Introduction to Network Security and Network Security - Threats and Solution. My main hobbies are socialising and dabbling a little in the world of Linux whilst tried to avoid looking like a great big geek in an anorak. I also like to play the guitar to keep the neighbours on their toes. Otherwise, I'm usually listening to the Pixies at ridiculously loud levels of decibels!!! In case you didn't make it, their gig in the Phoneix Park absolutely rocked! I almost felt sorry for the Chilli Peppers having to follow them onto the stage!

Linux Corner

Linux is an operating system which provides a free alternative to the Windows operating system. It has gained a lot of popularity in recent years especially in colleges and as an OS for servers. Much of it's popularity comes from the fact that it allows to user to delve beneath the simply point and click mentality of many other operating systems, however this can make it difficult for newcomers. Fortunately many easy-to-use distributions exist from companies such as Redhat, Corel, and Mandrake. Check out my simple beginners guide below.
  1. Which Distribution?

Looking for a powerful yet easy to use Linux Distribution? Check out Linux Mandrake. Puts Redhat to Shame.

  2. Linux Portal

Looking for a good site to make your Linux homepage? Go to linuxwaves.com. This site provides a good starting point for any newcomer and can set you up with a Linux hosted mail account as well as other services.

  3. Linux Downloads

For all the latest applications and utilities, point your browser in the direction of CNET's Download Center
