My name is Declan McGrath and I'm doing the MSc. in Software Design and Development at NUI Galway. I have had a long and chequered career to date and my primary degree was in Industrial Biochemistry in the University of Limerick. My main interest in computing at the moment is Content Based Multimedia Retrieval. My MSc. thesis concerns the development of a system which can differentiate between different classes of music and sounds and hence form the basis of a musical search engine. I am also interested in the field of image retrieval and medical imaging. To date the other main projects I have embarked on include the Computational analysis of E.coli DNA using Bioinformatic techniques. I did this as my Final Year Project in the University of Limerick and involved scanning stretches of DNA for features that would indicate the presence of potential genes. The fruits of my labour can be found in my Final Year Project Thesis. The main project I carried out this year is a Multi-Agent Based Simulation of an aution scenario which I wrote in C++. The code and executables can be found as a .zip file if your follow this source code link. In addition, I have compiled two literature reviews on Network Security which are available for download. They are Introduction to Network Security and Network Security - Threats and Solution. My main hobbies are socialising and dabbling a little in the world of Linux whilst tried to avoid looking like a great big geek in an anorak. I also like to play the guitar to keep the neighbours on their toes. Otherwise, I'm usually listening to the Pixies at ridiculously loud levels of decibels!!! In case you didn't make it, their gig in the Phoneix Park absolutely rocked! I almost felt sorry for the Chilli Peppers having to follow them onto the stage!
Medical Imaging is carried out as part of the Scientific Computing Group at NUI Galway. This covers many fields including image enhancement and image segmentation techniques. There is also a great interest in Astronomical Computing within this department and many astronomical image manipulation techniques are being applied in a medical context. As part of my own research I'm required to access repositories of tumor images. These can be found at the following sites.
